Safeguarding

Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility

Safeguarding Children

Weymouth and Portland Children's Centres have a mission statement and ethos which sets out to protect children and enable them to thrive at every level of their life through support in the early years.  The Centre has a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children as a shared responsibility with parents and other carers.

To support this statement, the Centre may provide or signpost to services that are specialised to promote opportunity, prevent problems, act early and act effectively if and when concerns arise.

Everyone's Responsibility

We cannot safeguard children alone.  All children's services agencies work in partnership with each other, there are duties and rules about information sharing but if staff, parents or carers have concerns about a child, other parent, provider, agency or any person; they have a responsibility to report any concerns.

Centre Policy

We are committed to provide a secure and supportive environment in which children can develop and grow into mature and responsible people.  Safeguarding children is a central part of our holistic approach to ensure that:

  • Children are protected from abuse and neglect
  • Every child reaches their full potential

We do this by:

  • Creating an environment whereby high standards of work, effort and behaviour are expected from children and adults, which are rewarded by praise and encouragement.
  • Providing sessions which help children to achieve their full potential
  • Providing appropriate training and learning opportunities to sustain the personal and professional development of all staff and volunteers
  • Developing an ethos and culture whereby everyone feels; valued and secure, shows understanding of others, respect for diversity and promotes equality of opportunity and encourages a sense of pride in our Centre
  • Our aim is to ensure that no child is discriminated against being treated less favourably or by a failure of staff to reasonable adjustments in recognition of children's needs and abilities
  • Fulfilling our duties to children and families and working in collaboration with other agencies as set out in the Children Act 2004 and Working Together to Safeguard Children Guidance 2006

What you can do

Parents and carers hopefully recognise their role in safeguarding children in their community.  If you have any concerns, no matter how small, you should report them to someone who you trust will listen.  The designated Safeguarding Officers at the Children's Centres are Sue Turle, Cluster Manager; Teresa Bowden, Centre Lead.  You can contact them on 01305 779294.

All concerns will be treated with the same importance and it is key for parents and carers to understand the format of safeguarding prevention and support. The Centre will make preliminary enquiries, and this may lead to more specialised agencies working with the children and family to help parents and carers support their children and prevent children from being at harm.

The welfare of the child is paramount.  We all have a responsibility to ensure that every child has the chance to fulfil their potential. We have the responsibility of ensuring children are safe, healthy and happy in their lives.
